Lighting on the Roof Top

A roof light is a window that is incorporated as part of the roof design usually an outward opening window. Roof windows are often confused with skylights. Roof windows differ from each of these other architectural and natural lighting elements in a few basic ways. Essentially over time a roof light has been known as a skylight or roof window all of which are popular alternatives for essentially the same thing.
Lighting on the roof is a great way to have more light in the room making the room look brighter and spacious. Unlike traditional wall windows a roof light will allow more light to enter into your home a it has a been designed as well as the location of the window. There was a time when installing a skylight was very expensive often leading to major problems such as the skylight leaking or condensation seeping through into the home or building. Though, those problems are a thing of the past with the new advances in manufacturing a skylight, there are few problems now with manufacturing than before. (more…)

Sun Tubes – Great for Homes With Unused Attics

Suntubes are a type of roof light which collect light from above the roof, reflect it through a tube and then let it out through the other end. The value of this really comes to fore with buildings which don’t have flat roofs or have unused attics, as it can take the sunlight from those areas and release it somewhere where it will have an impact on the people inside the building.

Suntubes are typically of a smaller size, but depending upon what the side collecting the light is designed like, it can be a very effective sunlight collector. They can be an ideal addition to a home with areas where there is little sunlight, such as upstairs corridors or even cellars.

Roof Lanterns -Why They are Often Preferred to Skylights

Roof lanterns and skylights are often talked about in the same breath and sold by the same companies, and while typically skylights have seen greater popularity, the trend recently has been in favour of roof lanterns.

Roof lanterns have a completely different style to skylights. A skylight is usually described as a singular window pane sitting horizontally within a flat roof, but roof lanterns are made up of a number of window panes which are joined together to form a dome like shape.

The style of roof lanterns provides people with a number of advantages. First and most importantly, there is an increase in space thanks to the style of the roof lantern; which can be very beneficial for the overall design of the room. Also, because they are made up of a number of smaller windows, those windows can be opened up individually (so long as they’ve been designed that way), which is often cheaper than having a comparatively sized skylight designed with an opening capacity but just as effective at providing air ventilation.

A Roof Light Can Be the Solution to All Types of Energy Efficiency Problems

The vast landscape of energy efficient fixtures that can be applied to all types of infrastructure offers both public and private organisations a variety of options for their professional space. Many approach change to their space’s infrastructure with a reserved mindset and are hesitant to make significant changes. However, the United Kingdom’s Climate Reduction Commitment, now called the CRC Efficiency Scheme, is placing stringent restrictions on the energy output of many stakeholders throughout the country’s various different professional sectors. This includes carbon emissions, electricity use, and anything else that might increase a professional space’s carbon footprint.  (more…)

Building a Home With Lots of Rooflights

Rooflights are increasingly a very desirable addition to home designs in the UK, and making sure that homes can have them installed easily is a concern for the roofing industry. It needs to be considered during the planning process and ideally installed at an early stage of the building’s existence.

To install a rooflight, the first concern which needs to be addressed is whether the building will maintain its structural integrity despite effectively having a hole in it. This can be impossible for some roof designs, which is one of the reasons why roofs where it can be done easily, like flat roofs, are becoming increasingly popular. The second concern is with ensuring that the rooflight doesn’t negatively affect the amount of heat-loss the roof causes too much.

Rooflights serve a great function inside a home or property; they result in a massive influx of natural light. Natural light can really improve the feel of a building, and it is essential for human health as well.
